The Weekend Read✨The Theory of Style: It’s More Than Just The Clothes You Wear

Hello!

This week on The Weekend Read, we are talking about the theory of style and how it is about more than just the clothes you wear. Have you ever looked at someone and thought, Wow, they just look put together? Chances are, their style is working in harmony with who they are. Personal style isn’t just about looking good, it’s about feeling like you. But for many, investing in a Personal Style Consultation feels like a treat or a luxury, rather than a necessity. Today, let’s explore why it’s not just a luxury but an essential tool in navigating the world with confidence.

A Brief History of Style

Fashion may change, but style is timeless. Throughout history, clothing has been used to signify wealth, status, and even personality. From the structured silhouettes of the Victorian era to the roaring rebellion of the 1920s flapper dresses, every decade has brought a new take on how we present ourselves.

The 1950s saw ultra-feminine hourglass figures championed by Dior’s New Look, while the 1960s embraced youthful, mod styles. The 70s were a blend of boho and disco glam, while the power suits of the 80s signified women stepping into boardrooms with confidence. The 90s brought grunge, minimalism, and the start of high-low dressing (mixing designer with everyday wear). Today? Style is about individuality, mixing influences, and sustainable choices.

But even as styles change, one thing remains constant: clothing is a form of self-expression. What we choose to wear sends signals about our personalities, lifestyles, and even aspirations. Whether it's the effortless chic of a French-inspired wardrobe or the bold, statement-making outfits of a trendsetter, every wardrobe tells a story.

Who Influences Style?

In the past, Hollywood icons like Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, and Grace Kelly set the tone for fashion trends. Their signature looks became iconic because they suited them so well—Audrey’s timeless elegance, Marilyn’s sultry femininity, and Grace’s refined - well - grace! Today, social media and digital influencers dictate trends at an astonishing pace, with personalities like Victoria Beckham, Alexa Chung, and Meghan Markle becoming modern style inspirations.

Yet, while trends come and go, true personal style transcends time. The best-dressed people are those who understand what works for them and remain consistent. Think of Anna Wintour’s sharp bob and oversized sunglasses, or Steve Jobs’ black turtleneck and jeans. Their outfits became part of their personal brand—an outward reflection of their inner confidence.

Why Style is More Than Just Clothes

Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist, believed in archetypes—universal symbols that guide human behaviour. He suggested that the way we dress is an expression of our inner self. If you feel out of sync with your wardrobe, it could be because you’re dressing for an outdated version of yourself.

Your clothes tell a story before you even speak. Imagine walking into a job interview: what you wear shapes that first impression. Would you trust a financial advisor in ripped jeans and trainers? Probably not. Dressing appropriately doesn’t mean losing your identity; it means aligning it with your intentions.

Similarly, consider how different outfits affect your mindset. A tailored blazer makes you feel professional and powerful. A flowy dress might put you in a relaxed, carefree mood. What you wear affects how you feel, how you act, and how others perceive you—so why not use it to your advantage?

Dressing for Your Body Shape

One of the most common frustrations I hear is, nothing looks good on me! The truth? You might just be wearing the wrong shapes for your body type. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Broad shoulders? Keep the top simple and add volume with fuller skirts or wide-leg trousers.
  • Straight up and down? Add curves with peplums, belts, and layered textures.
  • Carry weight around your middle? Create yourself a waist with wrap tops and skimming silhouettes.
  • Wider hips? Balance your proportions with structured shoulders and A-line skirts.
  • Defined waist? Show it off! Wrap dresses, fitted jackets, and high-waisted trousers work beautifully.

It’s not about hiding—it’s about proportion and balance. The right silhouette enhances your natural shape rather than working against it. And remember, fit is just as important as shape. Ill-fitting clothes can make even the best pieces look unflattering. Never cover what you don't like about yourself as it only draws more attention to that area.

Why Do We Have Different Styles?

Ever wondered why your best friend loves boho florals while you feel powerful in a structured jacket? Personal style is a mix of personality, culture, experiences, and even psychological comfort. Some people love classic, tailored pieces because they like structure in their lives. Others gravitate towards eclectic patterns because they enjoy creativity and spontaneity. Your wardrobe is an external reflection of who you are internally—so make sure you make it a true representation of you.

Mixing Styles & Colours

The magic of style happens when you start blending styles to make them your own. Love romantic styles but want some edge? Pair a floaty dress with a leather jacket. Love minimalism but need a bit of warmth? Add a soft knit or a statement accessory in your seasonal colours. Colour plays a huge role here too—wearing shades that suit you instantly makes any outfit look intentional and polished (see The Weekend Read #1 about the transformative power of colour here).

The Capsule Wardrobe – Less is More

A capsule wardrobe isn’t about having fewer clothes, it’s about having the right clothes. These are pieces that mix and match effortlessly, giving you endless outfit options. Remember that one persons capsule wardrobe will look entirely different to another's. Some of you may like the idea of a clutter-free capsule, whilst this may fill some of you with horror if you can't have multiples of each item. You need to do you, so here is a list of the basic essentials to include:

  • A well-fitting, smart jacket
  • A great pair of jeans
  • A neutral knit or sweater
  • A few tops including t-shirts, blouses and shirts
  • A casual jacket or coat
  • Comfortable, stylish shoes (trainers and ankle boots are winners)
  • A flattering dress that makes you feel incredible
  • A pair of tailored trousers and/or a skirt
  • A versatile handbag
  • Accessories including a belt, jewellery and a scarf

A well-curated capsule wardrobe saves time, money, and stress—no more staring at an overflowing wardrobe with nothing to wear!

Top 10 Style Tips to Take Away

  1. Dress for the life you want, not just the life you have. Style is a powerful tool for transformation.
  2. Fit is everything. A simple tweak from a tailor can make a high-street piece look designer.
  3. Know your colours. Wearing the right shades makes you look healthier, fresher, and more polished.
  4. Balance proportions. If your top is fitted, go looser on the bottom (and vice versa).
  5. Accessories make an outfit. Even jeans and a T-shirt look chic with a great bag and statement earrings and/or a scarf.
  6. Don’t be a fashion victim. Just because it’s trending doesn’t mean it suits you.
  7. Invest in quality over quantity. Fewer, better pieces will serve you well for years. Buy cheap and you'll be replacing it sooner.
  8. Mix high and low. A designer belt with a high-street dress? Perfectly stylish.
  9. Confidence is your best accessory. The best-dressed people are the ones who own their style.
  10. Style should be fun. Don’t overthink it—wear what makes you feel amazing!

Your Style Homework

I'd like you to take a moment to reflect: What’s in your wardrobe that you truly love? What do you keep reaching for? This is a clue to your personal style.

Shopping within your own wardrobe is always the best start. This week, why not take an hour to go through your wardrobe. Look at what you have that fits you now. Try creating five new outfits from pieces that you already own. If you are not great at accessorising, try adding a necklace or scarf and some earrings. Take photos of outfits you feel great in, create an album on your phone for future reference. If you have any clothes with labels on them, make an effort to wear them this week. If you try them on and you don't feel amazing, before you remove the label, take a picture of the piece and pop it on Vinted or Ebay and try and get some money back.

Remember, clothes express who you are, they tell those around you more about you than you realise. Take control of the narrative others think about you - you deserve to look and feel great everyday.

Until next time—stay stylish!

Enjoy your weekend! Next week, The Weekend Read is all about Make-Up - a complete guide to products, application and how to build your make-up wardrobe. Look out for that next Saturday!
