The Weekend Read✨Are You Looking For Confidence or Correction?
Hello,
There’s something Judi and I have been noticing more and more lately and we suspect you have too: a quiet shift and a subtle change in what we’re seeing on our screens and in real life. Faces are becoming smoother, lips are becoming fuller, skin is tightening and sadly, a return to a much slimmer, almost fragile silhouette on the red carpet.
The recent Oscar awards season sparked conversations across the board. Not just about fashion, although we always love this part, but about faces, bodies, and something much deeper: how women are choosing to present themselves as they age.
This got us thinking: Why do so many women feel the need to turn back the clock? And is this really what they’re trying to achieve?
The Promise of Looking Younger
Let’s start by saying this loud and clear that there is absolutely no judgement here in this week's blog. For many women, treatments like Botox, fillers and other cosmetic enhancements can feel like a confidence boost. They're a way to feel fresher, more energised and help you look more like yourself again. In a world where we are constantly seeing filtered, perfected images, this desire is completely understandable.
But here’s the question we keep coming back to: Are we chasing youth or are we chasing confidence? Because the two are not the same. Looking younger is often sold as the end goal with aesthetic brands, but when we dig a little deeper with our House of Colour clients, what they’re really telling us is this:
- I just want to feel like me again.
- I want to look well.
- I want people to notice me in a good way.
- I want to feel confident when I walk into a room.
This is where things get interesting.
The Influence We Don’t Talk About Enough
We are living in a world of constant visual comparison; social media, celebrity culture, filters and editing apps, it’s a steady stream of perfected faces and bodies. Even when we know it’s not real, these subtle messages still seep in. Add to that the subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle peer pressure; friends trying treatments and conversations normalising tweaks and top-ups, the idea that this is simply what we do now. Before we know it, what once felt like a choice can start to feel like an expectation.
So here’s something we want to challenge: What if confidence didn’t need to come from a corrective procedure?
The Return of the Skinny Ideal
We also can’t ignore what’s happening with body image right now. After years of celebrating curves, inclusivity and body positivity, there are signs that the pendulum may be swinging back the other way again. The recent red carpet events have showcased a noticeably slimmer aesthetic, sometimes to the point where it raises concern about individuals, rather than admiration. This raises a bigger question: Are we moving towards a version of beauty that feels harder to maintain, harder to achieve, and perhaps less kind to ourselves?
Chasing extremes whether in weight, skin, or age often come at a cost. Not just financially, but emotionally too.
A Different Way to Feel Good
This is where Judi and I want to offer an alternative perspective. In our world of colour and style we see something quite different happening. We see women walk into our studios feeling unsure, a little flat, perhaps disconnected from how they look, and then we see them leave lit up. Not because we’ve changed their face and not because we’ve altered their body, but because we’ve worked with who they already are.
When you wear the right colours, your skin looks clearer, your eyes shine brighter and your features are noticeably more defined. When you understand your colours and style, your clothes start to work for you, not against you.
The feedback we hear time and time again?
- I feel like me again.
- I didn’t realise it could be this easy.
- I’m getting so many compliments.
There are no needles in sight and the long term cost is a fraction of what can be paid for alleged cosmetic confidence.
Let’s Talk Cost Because It Matters
There’s also a very practical side to this conversation. Cosmetic treatments, while effective for some, are often ongoing. You need top-ups every few months, which leaves you with escalating costs over time.
Colour analysis and personal styling is a one-time investment that keeps on giving. Once you know your colours, you know them for life. Once you understand your style, you can apply it every single day for the rest of your life and at no extra cost.
It impacts everything; your wardrobe, your shopping habits, how you get dressed in the morning and how you feel walking out the door. Perhaps most importantly though, it builds confidence from the inside out, not the outside in.
Confidence vs Perfection
Confidence is really what it comes down to. Cosmetic treatments often focus on trying to achieve perfection; smoothing, lifting, tightening and reshaping. Colour and style focuses on enhancement by bringing out your natural features and your natural personality. Enhancement should be your focus, not perfection, as this very rarely exists.
One route asks 'how can I fix this?' The other route asks 'how can I celebrate this?' When you shift from fixing to celebrating, something quite powerful happens. You stop chasing an ideal and start owning who you are.
Your Weekend Challenge
We couldn’t resist giving you something to try this week. Before you consider changing your face, we’d love you to experiment with your look.
Here’s your challenge:
Pick one outfit this week and really elevate it using your colour and style knowledge. It might be:
- Wearing one of your absolute best colours near your face.
- Adding a lipstick that brings your complexion to life.
- Swapping a safe outfit for one that reflects your personality.
- Choosing accessories that draw attention upwards.
Then notice what happens. Do you feel different? Do you carry yourself differently? Do people comment? Confidence has a way of showing up, not just in how you look, but in how you move, speak and connect.
Final Thoughts: Choose Enhancement, Not Correction
We’re not here to tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do. But we are here to open up the conversation. Perhaps the goal isn’t to look younger, but to look better, brighter and more like yourself right now. If that can be achieved in a way that feels joyful, sustainable, and completely you, then bring it on!
If you want to book a colour refresh or a personal style session, a wardrobe edit or a personal shopping trip, we are here to help you achieve enhancement over correction.
Next week in The Weekend Read we'll be exploring the Easter escape edit: Why we dress better on holiday and how to pack for it - from British drizzle to sunshine style without the suitcase meltdown.
A Spring Invitation - Your Final Chance to Book
Judi and I are running our Spring/Summer 2026 Colour & Style Evenings this month, where we’ll be exploring the key pieces in store this season, showing how to style them, where to find them and how to adapt them to different body shapes, colour palettes and clothing personalities.
If you’ve ever looked at a new season's trend and thought that’s lovely, but not for me, this is exactly the space where we unpack why and how it can be for you.
We ran our first seasonal Colour & Style Evening this week, the final one is this Tuesday 31st March at 7pm. As part of the event you will also receive an extended shopping catalogue of over 100 pieces hand picked by Judi and myself, with shoppable links to make buying quick, easy and pain free.
