Seen & Celebrated: Bee Focused Photography

I'm Michaela - Colour Analyst and Personal Stylist with House of Colour, based in Horsham West Sussex. There are so many brilliant independent businesses around us, often built by people with a real passion for what they do. Seen & Celebrated is where I introduce you to some of my favourites - businesses that have a story worth hearing, doing things their own way, with a style all of their own.

Tell us a bit about you. Who are you and what do you do?
I am Danielle, a family and personal branding photographer based in the Horsham and Billingshurst area. I capture your story in a natural, authentic way. I focus heavily on the experience of a photoshoot itself. Family sessions are all about play, connection, and enjoying quality time together. Branding shoots are about showing up exactly as you are and taking a moment for yourself to share the story of your business.

What’s the why behind your business? What made you want to do what you do?
My love of photography began when my youngest son was born. After completing a few photography courses in Brighton, I simply could not put my camera down. I started capturing his everyday moments, and Bee Focused Photography grew naturally from there. Creativity has always been my passion. I have been an art lead in almost every school where I have taught, and I love bringing that same creative spark into my photography.

Where’s your favourite place to go locally when you have a bit of time to yourself?
The beach, always the beach. There is something calming and peaceful about the sound of the sea. Favourite spots include West Wittering and Ferring beach.

Where’s your favourite place to eat, drink or catch up with friends locally?
Our favourite cafe is a gorgeous Swedish place in Horsham called Johansson's. Amazing cakes, waffles, and buns! I am also a huge fan of cosy country pubs, such as The Hen and Chicken for a delicious curry, The Countryman for a summer pub garden, or our local, The George and the Dragon.

Do you have any favourite clothing brands and what are they?
I focus more on the overall style than a specific brand, but a push, I love Zara or Miss Selfridge for their boho clothes, and Nobody's Child often has lovely dresses (when the sale is on and I can afford it!).

What’s the most “you” thing hanging in your wardrobe right now, and why do you love it?
A black and gold boho maxi dress from Miss Selfridge, which I picked up in a charity shop for seven pounds. I love a good bargain. It features long, floaty sleeves and really brings out my inner hippy.

If a friend described your style, what do you think they’d say?
I would hope they say boho, but in reality I am usually found in jeans and a jumper. School run mum might be a more accurate description!

Do you have a favourite colour to wear, or one you’re naturally drawn to?
Ever since discovering my seasonal palette is Autumn, I am naturally drawn to warm oranges and camel tones, though I still love a bit of muted, dusky pink.

What’s one item of clothing (or accessory) you think is worth investing more money in and why?
Probably a good jacket or coat, as you wear it repeatedly throughout the colder months. Alternatively, a solid pair of boots, as I live in boots as soon as the flip flops are packed away.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given in business or in life?
Perhaps not advice, but my mantra is 'connection over perfection'. It is a concept that can be applied to almost everything in life, but especially to a photographer!

Where do you like to shop for clothes in the local area?
I love the look of local independent boutiques, though I am predominantly an online shopper. I do enjoy browsing TK Maxx to find items that are a bit unique, and Next always has lovely options as well.

What are you loving, looking forward to or feeling excited about at the moment?
I am really looking forward to an upcoming shoot with four therapists who are creating a collaborative project. We are heading to Devil's Dyke to capture their branding imagery and bring their ideas to life. Think therapy chair in the South Downs!
