The Weekend Read✨Mother of the Bride or Groom and the Wedding Guest Style Dilemma of 2026
Hello,
There are very few outfits in life that come with as much pressure as a wedding outfit. Particularly when you are the mother of the bride or groom. Suddenly, what should feel exciting can start to feel surprisingly emotional. You want to look elegant but not overdressed and stylish but not like you are trying too hard. You also want to look modern but not inappropriate and comfortable but still polished enough for the photographs that will live on for decades. Somewhere in the middle of all that, many women quietly admit to us that they simply don’t know where to start anymore.
The good news is, wedding dressing in 2026 is becoming far more relaxed, individual and personality-led than it has been for years. The old rules are softening: Matching hats and jackets are no longer compulsory and head-to-toe beige no longer feels expected. Women are becoming braver about wearing colour, softer tailoring, statement accessories and outfits that actually feel like themselves.
The best wedding outfit is never the most expensive or the trendiest, it is the one that allows you to feel confident, comfortable and authentically yourself from the first photograph to the final dance.
The Biggest Shift We Are Seeing for 2026
Perhaps the biggest change in occasionwear is that women no longer want to look done up, they want to look effortlessly fabulous. We are seeing a move away from stiff, structured occasionwear towards softer elegance. Think beautiful pieces in sumptuous fabrics that can often be worn again afterwards,
considering how much occasionwear can cost. Here's what to look for in 2026:
- Relaxed tailoring
- Tonal dressing
- Soft metallics
- Floaty layering
- Elegant, wide-leg trousers
- Contemporary co-ords
- Dresses with movement and texture
- More interesting sleeve details
- Statement jewellery replacing oversized fascinators
- Comfortable footwear finally becoming acceptable
The buy once and never wear again outfit is slowly disappearing. And thank goodness for that!
Venue Dressing Matters More Than Ever
One of the biggest mistakes people make is choosing an outfit without considering the venue properly. A countryside barn wedding requires a completely different approach to a London hotel wedding or a beach ceremony abroad. Your outfit has to work with the setting.
Country House or Manor Wedding
This is where timeless elegance shines. Think softer tailoring, midi dresses, silk blends, beautiful prints and refined accessories. This type of venue suits:
- Sophisticated florals
- Elegant tailoring
- Floaty fabrics
- Soft heels or block heels for practicality
- Hats or sculptural headpieces
Colour works beautifully here too. Dusty blues, sage greens, soft raspberry, teal, cornflower, peacock, warm pinks or rich neutrals all photograph beautifully outdoors. And please, don’t assume you must wear pale beige because you are over 50. You deserve colour too.
Barn Weddings
Barn weddings tend to feel slightly more relaxed and rustic, which means overly formal outfits can sometimes look disconnected from the venue. This is where modern dresses, elevated separates and softer styling really come into their own. Wide-leg trousers with a silk blouse and statement earrings can look sensational here. So can relaxed tailoring or contemporary jumpsuits for those who prefer something different. Practicality matters too: Grass and stilettos are not friends, use layering for cooler evenings and consider breathable fabrics depending on the weather.
City Weddings and Luxury Hotels
This is where glamour can step forward. Sharper tailoring, cleaner silhouettes, satin finishes, monochrome styling and stronger accessories often work beautifully in these settings.
For evening weddings especially, we are seeing a return to:
- Elegant column dresses
- Modern tailoring
- Chic monochrome
- Statement sleeves
- Contemporary metallics
- Luxe fabrics like crepe and silk satin
The key word for 2026 is refined rather than fussy.
Destination Weddings
These are perhaps the hardest weddings to dress for practically. Heat, travel and comfort all become major considerations. Natural fabrics become essential, floaty silhouettes work harder and shoes matter far more than you realise. No one enjoys wobbling across cobblestones in a stiletto heel or sweating through a fitted jacket.
Destination dressing works best when it feels lighter, easier and more relaxed:
- Linen blends
- Beautiful co-ords
- Sleeveless layering
- Soft draping
- Flat metallic sandals
- Wedges
- Lightweight tailoring
Colour absolutely comes alive abroad. This is where many women finally allow themselves to step away from black and embrace turquoise, coral, aqua, raspberry, lime, electric blue or pink. Honestly, wedding photographs adore colour.
This is where your clothing personality really starts to matter. A Natural personality forced into a highly structured formal suit rarely looks or feels comfortable. Equally, a Dramatic personality in a tiny ditsy floral tea dress often feels diminished. The outfit should still feel like you.
Dressing for Your Clothing Personality
This is where wedding dressing becomes transformational rather than stressful. When your outfit reflects your personality, you stop looking dressed up and start looking effortlessly stylish.
Dramatics suit bold elegance. Clean lines, scale and statement pieces matter.
Choose architectural dresses, strong tailoring, bold colour blocking, statement jewellery, elegant jumpsuits or long fluid silhouettes. A Dramatic woman will look out of place in overly fussy florals or tiny delicate detailing.
Classics shine in timeless sophistication. Beautiful tailoring, clean silhouettes, structured dresses, refined fabrics, elegant simplicity with pearls or understated jewellery. Classics often struggle when trends become too exaggerated or overly bohemian.
Naturals need ease and movement. Relaxed tailoring, soft layering, linen blends and organic textures should give a slightly undone elegance. Comfortable but elevated footwear is a must, naturals in particular need comfort to feel confident.
Gamines need fun, contrast and energy. Cropped tailoring, playful accessories, interesting shapes, contrast details, modern shorter hemlines and statement shoes. Gamines often disappear in overly safe occasionwear.
Ingenues suit softness and delicacy beautifully. Soft draping, feminine shapes, watercolour florals, pretty sleeve details and delicate jewellery. Too much heaviness can overpower an Ingenue personality.
Romantics are made for weddings. Soft glamour, draping and femininity work beautifully. Bias-cut dresses, luxe fabrics, soft necklines, elegant curves with beautiful movement and glamorous accessories. Romantics need softness rather than sharp tailoring.
Comfort Is No Longer Optional
We also need to consider comfort. Many women still buy occasionwear that looks beautiful when you're standing still, but feels unbearable after twenty minutes. You should be able to sit, eat, walk, dance and breathe comfortably.
Groundbreaking, we know.
The best dressed women at weddings are rarely the ones wearing the most uncomfortable outfit. They are usually the women who feel at ease in their clothes. This is also why fabric matters enormously. Cheap occasionwear fabrics can photograph poorly, cling awkwardly and become uncomfortable quickly. Better fabrics move differently and sit better on the body. It is worth investing in quality where possible.
Where To Shop for Wedding Season 2026
One of the questions we get asked most often is where to actually shop for occasionwear. The answer depends less on your age and more on your personality, budget, comfort needs and how formal the wedding is. The good news for 2026 is that occasionwear has become far more wearable and accessible. You no longer have to choose between looking matronly or spending thousands.

Final Thoughts: Occasionwear That Lets You Shine
Weddings are emotional occasions. They mark change, family, love and new chapters. Your outfit should support that experience, not create anxiety around it.
The right colour can make you glow and the right style can make you stand taller. The right outfit can allow you to feel fully present rather than worrying about your shoes, your arms, your tummy or whether you chose the right outfit.
Perhaps this is what modern occasionwear is really about now. Not dressing to disappear politely into the background, but dressing in a way that allows you to feel like the very best version of yourself. Whether you are mother of the bride, mother of the groom or simply attending as a guest, you deserve to feel fabulous too.
Next week in The Weekend Read we'll be talking about the colour yellow, and how to make it work in your wardrobe whatever season you are.
Best wishes,
