The Weekend Read✨Evening Wear, Rewritten: The New Rules of Dressing Up (and Down)

Hello,

There was a time not that long ago when evening wear came with a very clear rulebook: Black tie meant floor-length gowns and tuxedos, drinks with friends meant a nice top and jeans, and dinner out fell somewhere in between. The dilemma of what to wear was which nice top or which dress rather than whether your outfit was too much, or not enough, and heaven forbid if you got it wrong.

What we’re seeing now is that these rules have relaxed. And in many ways, that’s a wonderful thing. Modern evening wear is no longer about fitting into a rigid dress code, it’s about understanding the spirit of the occasion and expressing it in a way that feels like you. Which, as you can imagine, is exactly where colour and personal style come into their own.

From black tie to sofa soirées, we're here to help you get it right, your way.

The Death of 'One Right Outfit'

Even the most traditional events have softened. Black tie is no longer exclusively black, cocktail dressing isn’t confined to bodycon dresses and heels and smart casual has become one of the most interpreted, and misinterpreted, dress codes around.

What we’re seeing instead is a shift towards personalisation. You don’t have to look like everyone else in the room anymore, you just need to look like the best version of yourself for that setting.

We’d argue this is where many people feel more confused than ever because fewer rules can sometimes feel like no guidance at all. So let’s bring back a little structure, but make it flexible.

The Evening Wear Spectrum

Rather than thinking in rigid categories, we encourage you to think of evening wear as a spectrum. At one end, you have full black tie, at the other, a relaxed evening at home with friends. And in between? A whole range of occasions that require slightly different levels of polish. Let’s walk through it:

Black Tie With a Modern Twist

This is still the most formal end of the spectrum. Even here though, things have evolved. For women, floor-length gowns are still beautiful, but so are elegant jumpsuits, tailored co-ords, or a striking midi dress in a luxe fabric.

For men, a tuxedo remains classic, but velvet jackets in midnight blue or subtle patterns can elevate the look.

The key? Fabric and finish. Silk, satin, sequins, velvet and chiffon instantly signal evening even in simpler silhouettes.

Dramatics can go bold in statement silhouettes or colour. Romantics shine in soft draping and embellishment and Classics keep it timeless and refined.

Cocktail & Smart Evening Events

This is where most people get stuck. The modern cocktail look is less about a specific garment and more about intentional dressing. It says: I’ve made an effort.

For women, this might be a beautifully cut midi dress, or tailored trousers with a silk blouse and statement earrings.

For men, a blazer with well-fitted trousers and a quality shirt does the job perfectly.

If you could walk straight from dinner into a slightly smarter bar and not feel underdressed, you’ve got it right.

Relaxed Evenings Out: Dinner, Theatre, Drinks

This is where the lines blur the most and where personal style really gets to lead. A great pair of jeans with a structured blazer, a knit dress with boots or a co-ord set with flats. These all work beautifully when the fabrics, colours and fit are considered. It’s less about dressing up and more about dressing well.

Cosy Evenings In But Make It Stylish

This is the category that didn’t really exist before and now it absolutely does.

Enter the sofa soirée. Soft knit co-ords, elevated loungewear, relaxed dresses with beautiful accessories. You want to feel comfortable but still like you’ve made an effort. How you feel in your clothes changes how you show up even at home.

Dressing for You: Clothing Personality in the Evening

The same dress code can look completely different depending on your clothing personality:

  • Dramatic: bold shapes, strong lines, high contrast, statement pieces.
  • Classic: clean, elegant, timeless, never overdone.
  • Natural: relaxed tailoring, texture, effortless layering.
  • Gamine: playful, cropped, quirky details, unexpected combinations.
  • Ingenue: soft, delicate, light fabrics, subtle detailing.
  • Romantic: fluid, feminine, draping, embellishment.

The goal isn’t to copy someone else's outfit, it’s to translate the occasion through your personality. This is what makes an outfit feel effortless rather than forced.

The Details That Change Everything: Accessories & Shoes

Let’s talk about the pieces that often get overlooked but make all the difference:

Accessories

Evening is your moment to dial things up just slightly more than the day.

Statement earrings, a beautiful clutch, a silk scarf, a bold cuff. These are the pieces that elevate even the simplest outfit, but always in line with your personality. Dramatics go bold, Classics stay refined and Gamines can have a little fun.

Shoes

We talk about this a lot with clients because painful shoes can ruin even the most beautiful outfit. The good news is you have options. Block heels, elegant flats, smart trainers and low kitten heels can work depending on the occasion.

Our rule? If you can’t stand comfortably for an hour in them, they’re probably not the right choice. Style should never come at the expense of how you feel.

Men’s Styling Spotlight: Modern Evening Wear, Simplified

Let’s be honest, men's evening wear used to feel even more rule-bound than womens. Black suit, white shirt, bow tie, done. But just like womenswear, things have shifted and for the better.

The modern man has far more flexibility, without needing a wardrobe overhaul.

For formal events, a tuxedo is still a safe and stylish choice, but there’s now room to introduce personality. It could be a velvet dinner jacket, a midnight blue suit, or a textured fabric that subtly elevates the look without shouting.

For smart evening occasions, the formula is refreshingly simple: a well-fitted blazer, a quality shirt or fine knit and tailored trousers. The difference now lies in fit and finish, slimmer cuts, better fabrics and thoughtful colour choices.

And for relaxed evenings? This is where many men really come into their own. A great pair of dark jeans, a structured jacket, and clean, smart trainers or loafers strike that perfect balance between effort and ease.

If there’s one thing we wish more men understood is that fit is everything. A well-cut, properly fitted jacket will always outshine something expensive but ill-fitting. Accessories for men are also having a quiet moment. Pocket squares, belts, watches, even the texture of a shoe. These small details can elevate an outfit without overcomplicating it.

And just like with womenswear, comfort matters: shoes should support, not sabotage an evening. There are now so many elegant options that don’t require breaking them in for weeks beforehand. Ultimately, modern men's evening wear follows the same principle as women’s: It’s not about wearing more, it’s about wearing better.

Final Thoughts: Feeling Confident is Key

Perhaps the biggest shift in evening wear isn’t what we’re wearing but why we’re wearing it. It’s no longer about impressing the room, it’s about feeling confident, comfortable and completely yourself whether you’re in a full-length gown or a beautifully styled knit set on your own sofa. When you get this right, people notice. Not the outfit. You.

Next week in The Weekend Read we'll be talking about how we tell the story of who we are every day with the clothes we wear. What story are your clothes telling those around you?

Best wishes,
