The Weekend Read * More Than Just Colour: The Five Pieces Of The Style Puzzle
Hello,
When we meet our clients for the first time, it's more often than not for colour analysis. At House of Colour, we are known for colour analysis, and understandably so. It's the service people see most on social media. It's visual, transformational and often emotional. But colour analysis is only the first piece of a much bigger puzzle.
Whilst colour analysis is often the starting point of the journey, it was never meant to be the whole journey. Knowing your best colours is powerful. It can instantly make you look healthier, brighter, more rested and more you. It can stop expensive mistake buys and help you walk into a room with more confidence. But colour alone can't tell you why some outfits still don’t feel right, why your wardrobe still feels chaotic, or why getting dressed can still feel strangely exhausting.
The real magic happens when all five elements of what we do begin working together: colour analysis, make-up, personal style, wardrobe editing and personal shopping. Individually they are useful, together, they become life-changing. When every
Why So Many Wardrobes Still Feel Wrong
A lot of us don’t actually lack clothes, what we lack is clarity. Our wardrobes are usually made up of years of random purchases, emotional buys, trend-led pieces, the might-come-in-useful-one day items, clothes bought for a former version of ourselves and pieces that almost work, but not quite. The result is a wardrobe full of clothes and yet somehow we have nothing to wear.
We open the wardrobe doors and can feel overwhelmed before the day has even started. That overwhelm rarely comes from laziness or lack of effort. In fact, many of us work incredibly hard at trying to get our style right. The problem is, we're usually trying to solve only one part of the equation at a time.
Buying more clothes does not solve confusion and following trends does not create personal style. Knowing your colours does not automatically teach you about shape, proportion or personality. It is the combination of that information that creates confidence.
Colour Analysis: The Foundation Stone
Colour analysis is often where we can finally breathe out. We suddenly understand why certain shades drain us while others make strangers stop us in the street and compliment us. We understand why black can feel harsh, and why camel looks glorious on one friend and dreadful on another.
For many of us, it is the first time shopping starts to make sense. Our colour palette becomes a filter, a guide which at the same time narrows our choice, yet opens up a world of colour that has overwhelmed us in the past.
But colour alone can't tell you whether a relaxed linen jumpsuit reflects your personality better than structured tailoring. It can't explain why one patterned dress feels busy while another feels balanced. It can't teach proportion, scale, texture or silhouette.
Make-up: The Finishing Touch
Make-up is often seen as separate from style, but it really is part of the same story. The right make-up should enhance rather than disguise. For some of us, that means a polished 'no make-up make-up' look that simply makes us appear fresher and brighter. For others it may mean stronger definition, a bold lip or a more glamorous finish. Neither is right or wrong, the key is harmony.
When make-up really works with your colouring, personality and lifestyle, it stops feeling intimidating and becomes another tool that helps you look healthy, rested and confident. Much like clothing, make-up should support who you are, rather than fight against it.
Personal Style: The Missing Link You Didn't Know You Needed
This is the session that can change everything. Many clients come to style thinking it will simply be about body shape or rules. In reality, it is far more psychological than that. Personal style is about understanding why clothes work on you, not just physically, but emotionally. It's not only about balance and proportion, but about identity.
Are you naturally more relaxed and understated? Sharp and dramatic? Feminine and soft? Playful and creative? Elegant and refined? Most people are a blend, and when clothing reflects that blend properly, people notice. Not because you suddenly look fashionable, but because you look believable in your clothes.
This is often the difference between wearing an outfit and embodying it. It also explains why copying influencers rarely works long-term. You can admire someone else’s look, but if it does not align with your personality, scale, proportions or lifestyle, it will always feel slightly uncomfortable, like fancy dress rather than authenticity.
Wardrobe Editing: Turning Theory Into Practice
This is the point where the theory becomes practical. Even after colour, make-up and style sessions, many of us still stand in front of our wardrobes filled with old habits. Wardrobe editing is not about throwing everything away and starting again. In fact, some of the best edits involve rediscovering pieces you already own, but had stopped seeing properly. It's about creating clarity:
- What genuinely works?
- What fits your current life?
- What reflects who you are now?
- What mixes and matches easily?
- What is causing visual clutter or decision fatigue?
A good wardrobe shouldn't feel stressful. It should function like a supportive friend; easy, cohesive and reliable. This is often where we realise how much money we have unknowingly wasted over the years buying duplicates, almost right items or panic purchases for events. A cohesive wardrobe saves far more than money: It saves energy. And in our busy lives, mental energy matters enormously.
Personal Shopping: Learning To Shop With Purpose
This is perhaps one of the most misunderstood services we offer. People often imagine personal shopping means being swept around luxury boutiques spending thousands. In reality, our sessions are incredibly practical and educational. We teach you:
- How to spot the right shapes immediately.
- How to recognise quality, balance and versatility.
- How to avoid being distracted by trends or sales rails.
- How to walk into a changing room with a plan instead of panic
- How to stop buying clothes that never truly earn their place in your wardrobe.
Once you understand both colour and style, shopping becomes quicker, calmer and far less emotionally draining. You stop second-guessing yourself, you stop buying items just in case and you start building a wardrobe intentionally instead of accidentally. To some, the most surprising thing of all is you often buy less: Better decisions usually mean fewer decisions.

Final Thoughts: The True Colour and Style Journey
If we could only use one word to describe the colour and style journey, it's confidence:
- Confidence when opening your wardrobe.
- Confidence when getting dressed for work or a night out.
- Confidence when applying your make-up.
- Confidence when packing a suitcase.
- Confidence when shopping.
- Confidence when looking in the mirror.
This is what people often underestimate. When all five areas work together, style becomes less about trying too hard and more about finally understanding yourself properly. Perhaps this is why clients who complete the full journey often describe it as far bigger than just clothes, because confidence rarely comes from owning more. It comes from finally knowing what truly works.
Next week in The Weekend Read we'll be talking about...taking a break. We've written every weekend since the beginning of 2025, so we're going to have a break through the month of June and we'll be back in your inboxes in July.
Best wishes,
Judi & Jenny xx
