The Weekend Read Blog * The Story Your Clothes Tell Us…
Hello,
Have you ever stopped and wondered what your outfit says about you before you've even opened your mouth? The truth is, your clothes are talking all the time. Quietly, instantly and often before you’ve even had a chance to say a single word. And whether we like it or not, people are listening.
Now, before anyone says it, yes, there are some people that say (and perhaps we've even said it ourselves) that they don’t care what other people think. And genuinely, sometimes that’s true. But even that, ironically, is telling a story: choosing not to engage with how you’re perceived is, in itself, a narrative.
So the question isn’t really “Do my clothes tell a story?” It’s “Am I choosing the story I want them tell?”
The Silent Language We All Understand
Think about uniforms for a moment. A police officer, a nurse or a barrister in court. Before they speak, before they act, we already have a sense of who they are, what they represent and how we should respond to them. That’s not accidental, it’s the power of visual communication.
When you see someone in scrubs, you instinctively feel cared for. A sharply dressed lawyer? They say authority and expertise. Military uniform? They say discipline, strength and respect.
What many of us don't realise is that clothing sets the tone and creates expectation. You may not wear a uniform, but you are still communicating every day in exactly the same way, so it's important to remember this.
Your Everyday Narrative
Whether you’re heading into a meeting, popping to the shops, going out for dinner, or hosting friends at home, your clothes are quietly shaping how others experience you.
More importantly, they shape how you experience yourself. We see this all the time with clients: when life feels a little unsettled, style is often one of the first things to slip. You may be a new mum, having a career change, the children are leaving home or there's a shift in your routine. It’s not because you’ve lost your sense of style, it’s because you’ve temporarily lost clarity of your narrative. If you don’t know how you want to show up, how can your wardrobe possibly support you?
Why This Matters More Than We Admit
There’s a common belief that caring about how we look is somehow shallow or unimportant, that it shouldn’t matter. So let’s challenge that for a moment. If your clothes can help you feel more confident, more like yourself, more aligned with who you are, then why wouldn’t this matter?
If they can help others understand you more clearly by showing your professionalism, your creativity, your warmth and your energy, why wouldn’t you use that to your advantage?
This isn’t about impressing people. It’s about expressing yourself with intention. It’s about making sure the outside reflects the inside.
You Are the Author of Your Story
Here’s the empowering part: you are completely in control of this narrative. It's not dictated by trends, your age, your body shape or by what’s in fashion. It's dictated by you.
It starts with a very simple question: How do I want to be perceived? Not how you should be perceived, not by what anyone else expects, but genuinely what feels right for you.
We ask our clients to choose 3 to 6 words that capture how they want to show up in the world. Words like:
- Elegant
- Relaxed
- Creative
- Polished
- Approachable
- Bold
- Understated
- Confident
- Fun
- Sexy
There are no right or wrong words here, just your choice of words.
Dressing With Intention, Not Habit
Once you have those words, something quite magical happens: You stop getting dressed on autopilot. Instead of reaching for the same safe outfits, you start to ask yourself:
Does this reflect how I want to feel today? Does this align with the version of me I want to present?
Suddenly, getting dressed becomes less about what will do and more about what feels right. This doesn’t mean you need a whole new wardrobe, in fact most of the time, it’s about seeing what you already own in a different way.
That blazer you only wear for best? Could it work with jeans for a relaxed but polished look? That dress you’ve been saving? What story are you waiting to tell?
The Subtle Power of Alignment
When your clothes align with your identity, people feel it, even if they can’t quite explain why. You appear more confident, more at ease, and most importantly, more you. Interestingly, the feedback we hear most from clients isn’t that people noticed their outfit. They hear something else entirely: People say you look well. They tell you you look really confident. And that makes you feel like yourself again.
This is the difference taking ownership of your story makes. When your clothing story is clear, it stops being about the clothes and starts being about you.
When the Story Feels Lost
If you’re reading this and think you have no idea what your style says about you anymore, you’re not alone. This is incredibly common, particularly during life transitions.
The key isn’t to rush out and buy something new in the hope it will fix the feeling. It’s to pause, reflect, and reconnect. Ask yourself this:
- Who am I now?
- What matters to me?
- How do I want to feel when I walk into a room?
Your wardrobe should support this version of you, not who you were five or ten years ago.
A Challenge for the Week
Before you open your wardrobe tomorrow morning, take a moment. Choose your three to six words that describe how you want to show up today. Keep them simple and be honest with yourself.
Then, as you get dressed, let those words guide your choices. You might be surprised how differently you approach your wardrobe, and how differently you feel as a result.
Final Thoughts: Take Control of Your Story
Clothes might seem like a small part of a bigger picture, but they’re often the most visible expression of who we are. They're our daily introduction to the world. So rather than leaving that introduction to chance, why not take the pen and write the story yourself? Because when you do, something shifts. You don’t just get dressed, you show up with intention, clarity, and confidence. And that’s a story always worth telling.
Next week in The Weekend Read, we'll be talking about sportswear; what's in the shops and how to inject some colour into your outfits. Whether it's competitive sport or sport as a hobby, we'll be looking at how to style your sportswear with colour.
Best wishes,
