The Weekend Read: All Dressed Up Without Spending A Fortune, Our Christmas Partywear Survival Guide
Hello!
Well, here we go again! One minute we're discussing autumn coats and ankle boots, and the next the shops are awash with sequins, velvet, satin and enough sparkle to illuminate the National Grid! Yes, ladies, Christmas party season is almost upon us.
And with it comes that familiar dilemma of what to wear; The office Christmas party, drinks with the neighbours, dinner with friends and the annual family get-together. Perhaps there's even a glamorous black-tie event if we're lucky! Suddenly, our social calendars are filling up, and despite having wardrobes bursting with clothes, we find ourselves standing in front of them declaring we have nothing to wear.
Before you reach for your credit card and start panic-buying something covered in sequins, we'd like to suggest a different approach this Christmas. Here's a little secret we've learnt from years of styling women and men of all shapes, sizes and ages. Looking fabulous doesn't necessarily mean buying something new. Sometimes it simply means looking at what you already own with fresh eyes.
One Outfit, Three Parties
Let's start with a challenge. Imagine you've got three Christmas invitations: a smart work party, festive drinks with friends and a lovely dinner out. Do you need three different outfits? Absolutely not!
Let's take something most of us already have in our wardrobes: a beautifully fitting pair of tailored trousers. They can be in black, navy, chocolate, charcoal or even cream, whatever works with your colouring and personal style.
Party One: The Work Christmas Do
Pair your trousers with a beautiful satin blouse, elegant earrings and smart shoes, then add a tailored jacket if the occasion calls for it. You'll look sophisticated, polished and just the right amount of festive.
Party Two: Drinks with Friends
We're using the same trousers, but going for a completely different look. Swap the blouse for a fine-knit top, throw on a velvet blazer and add a statement necklace or fabulous earrings. You could also add a metallic bag for a little extra sparkle.
Party Three: Dinner and Dancing
Out come the trousers again! This time, add an embellished top, a glamorous clutch bag and your favourite evening shoes.
Three parties and three looks using one hardworking pair of trousers. And nobody will be thinking if you wore those trousers last week, they'll be far too busy admiring how fabulous you look. The trick is to change the mood of the outfit, not necessarily the outfit itself.
The Christmas Wardrobe Treasure Hunt
Before buying anything new, we want you to have a proper rummage through your wardrobe. Remember that gorgeous velvet jacket you bought for Christmas three years ago? What about the sparkly top that hasn't seen daylight since your friend's 50th? Or those beautiful metallic shoes you wore to a wedding and then promptly forgot about? We suspect there are some absolute treasures hiding in there.
Try pulling out five pieces that could potentially work for Christmas. A satin blouse, a velvet jacket, a favourite dress, some beautiful jewellery or even a fabulous pair of dark jeans. Now start experimenting. Could that satin blouse work with your favourite trousers? Could your sparkly top look fabulous underneath a tailored suit? What happens when you add a statement belt to a dress you've worn dozens of times? You might be surprised. And remember, you don't have to look like a walking Christmas decoration to look festive. Sometimes one beautiful accessory is all it takes.
Sparkle Without the Struggle: Partywear for Real Bodies
If you've been following along with us for a while, you'll know we're passionate about something most weeks! Christmas partywear should make you feel fabulous, not uncomfortable, self-conscious or desperate to get home and change. And yet, so much occasion wear seems designed for women who are six feet tall, a size eight and perfectly happy spending an entire evening balancing on four-inch heels. Which is wonderful if that's you, but what about the rest of us?
If you're curvy: Beautifully draped fabrics, wrap styles, soft tailoring and well-cut wide-leg trousers can look incredibly glamorous. Look for clothes that follow your shape without pulling or clinging.
If you're petite: Pay attention to proportions. A cropped jacket, well-positioned waistline or tonal outfit can create a beautifully balanced silhouette. Don't let oversized partywear overwhelm you.
If you're tall: Embrace those gorgeous long lines! Wide-leg trousers, elegant jumpsuits, flowing floor length dresses and longer jackets can look spectacular. And remember, you don't need heels to look dressed up.
If you carry weight around your tummy: Try gentle ruching, fluid fabrics, asymmetric details or a beautifully cut jacket. The aim isn't to disguise your body, but to create an outfit you feel comfortable and confident wearing.
If you have a fuller bust: Open necklines, softly draped blouses and well-fitting jackets can create lovely balance. Watch out for high necklines that feel restrictive, or too much embellishment around the bust.
Do you have physical challenges, perhaps swollen feet, lymphoedema, mobility difficulties or simply find heels uncomfortable? Please don't feel that glamour requires suffering. Beautiful metallic flats, embellished loafers, comfortable block heels and elegant wide-leg trousers can look every bit as fabulous as a cocktail dress and stilettos.
We always say that the best outfit is one that allows you to enjoy the occasion. After all, nobody wants to spend the Christmas party thinking about their aching feet!
What's on the High Street for Christmas 2026?
Of course, sometimes our wardrobes really do need a little update, so there's nothing wrong with treating ourselves to something lovely. But this year, rather than buying another outfit that might only see the light of day once, we'd encourage you to invest in something that works harder. We've been taking a look at the Christmas collections, and velvet, satin, metallics, embellishment and beautifully tailored separates are all making their presence felt. Here are five pieces we'd consider investigating
The Velvet Blazer: Possibly our favourite festive wardrobe investment. Wear it with tailored trousers for Christmas dinner, jeans for drinks or over a dress for a special occasion. And come January? It's still fabulous!
The Satin Blouse: A gorgeous alternative to sequins. Look for beautiful draping, flattering necklines and colours that complement your natural colouring. Wear it now with smart trousers and later with jeans.
The Metallic Shoe: Gold, silver, pewter, bronze or champagne. A metallic shoe can transform the simplest outfit. And no, it doesn't have to have a towering heel.
Statement Jewellery: Sometimes the smallest purchase makes the biggest difference. A fabulous pair of earrings, an interesting necklace or a beautiful brooch can completely transform something you already own.
The Evening Bag: Think metallic finishes, velvet, embellishment or an interesting shape. A lovely evening bag can be the finishing touch that takes your everyday outfit into party territory.
So where is the best place to shop? If you're working with a smaller budget, New Look's festive collection includes embellished tops, tailored separates and party accessories, while Next has plenty of velvet, sequins and decorative knitwear. For mid-range options, Marks & Spencer is worth exploring for versatile party separates, particularly if you're looking for something you can wear beyond Christmas. And if you're considering an investment purchase, John Lewis has some beautiful occasionwear this season, including pieces from Reiss, Hobbs and its new collaboration with RIXO.
Never assume the most expensive option is automatically the best. Look at the fabric, fit, finish and how often you'll realistically wear it. A £40 blouse that fits beautifully and works with six things you already own could be a much better purchase than a £180 dress that spends the next eleven months gathering dust.
The £150 Christmas Dress
Let's talk cost per wear. Here's a little calculation that might make you think twice before buying something new. Imagine you buy a gorgeous Christmas dress for £150 and you wear it to one party. That's £150 per wear. Wear it three times and the cost drops to £50 per wear. Wear it ten times and suddenly it's £15 per wear.
Now imagine buying an £80 velvet blazer. You wear it to three Christmas events, four dinners and five lunches throughout the year. That's twelve wears at just £6.67 per wear. Of course, we all occasionally buy something simply because we love it, and that's absolutely fine. But when we're trying to make our money go further, it's worth asking the following:
- Will I wear this again?
- Can I style it in at least three different ways?
- Does it work with clothes I already own?
- Do I absolutely LOVE it?
Buying something simply because it's reduced from £120 to £60 isn't saving £60 if you never wear it. And there's another benefit to shopping more thoughtfully. We're reducing unnecessary purchases, giving our clothes longer lives and helping keep perfectly wearable garments out of landfill. A win for our wardrobes, our purses and the planet.
The Finishing Touches
Here's one of our favourite styling secrets: You can wear the simplest outfit in the world and make it look extraordinary with the right finishing touches. Perhaps a beautiful belt, a fabulous pair of earrings, a metallic bag, a velvet jacket or a gorgeous lipstick in exactly the right shade.
And this is where knowing your colours really comes into its own. If you're a Winter, you'll sparkle in cool silver, icy tones or vibrant jewel colours. Summers will love softer metallics, smoky blues, cool pinks and elegant pewter. Autumns will look glorious in bronze, copper, kingfisher and dark brown. And Springs will shine in bright gold, warm coral, clear turquoise and beautiful light-reflecting champagne tones.
There's absolutely no rule that says Christmas partywear has to be black. The right colours can make you look radiant before you've added a single sequin.
The Christmas Party Outfit Reality Check
Before we finish, can we just mention something that rarely makes it into glossy fashion magazines: The practicalities of partywear. That fabulous jumpsuit might look sensational in the changing room, but have you considered negotiating the ladies' loo after two glasses of prosecco? Those gorgeous shoes might look wonderful standing still, but can you actually walk in them? And that sequinned top? Is it going to scratch your arms all evening?
Before committing to an outfit, we recommend four very important tests: The sitting-down test, the walking-and-dancing test, the bathroom test, and, perhaps most importantly at Christmas, the can-I-eat-a-three-course-dinner-in-this test! Because feeling comfortable is every bit as important as looking fabulous.
This week, we're setting you a little festive challenge. We want you to create three different Christmas party looks using clothes you already own. Choose one main piece, perhaps a dress, trousers, skirt or jacket. Then style it for three different occasions such as a Christmas lunch, drinks with friends and a fabulous evening out. Change the accessories, add a different jacket, experiment with jewellery or try a new combination.
And if you discover there's one little thing missing from your wardrobe, that's the piece you can put on your Christmas shopping list. We'd absolutely love to see what you come up with, so why not photograph your three looks and share them with us? You might even inspire somebody else to rediscover a forgotten wardrobe treasure.
Final Thoughts: Sparkle More, Spend Less
Christmas is supposed to be about enjoying ourselves; spending time with people we love, having a laugh, making memories and perhaps indulging in one too many mince pies. It shouldn't involve spending a fortune on clothes we don't need or squeezing ourselves into something that makes us uncomfortable.
So this year, let's approach festive dressing a little differently. Let's buy less, wear more and style creatively allowing us to sparkle in our own way. The most fabulous thing you can wear to any Christmas party isn't a designer dress or an expensive pair of shoes, it's the confidence that comes from feeling completely comfortable being yourself. And that, lovely readers, never goes out of fashion.
Next week, we're turning our attention to those magical finishing touches. Think fabulous jewellery, beautiful bags, shoes, belts and accessories that can transform even the simplest outfit into something special.
Best wishes,
Judi & Jenny xx
