Sweater Weather: How to Wear Your Knits This Winter

Posted by: House of Colour, December 19, 2024

One thing we love about this time of year is how much time we get to spend in our pyjamas. However, there’s only so much Netflix we can binge whilst gorging on Celebrations (FYI: the limit does not exist), so, what do you wear when it’s probably/definitely time to leave the house? ‘Tis the season for embracing all things knitwear! Layer up and swaddle yourself in your cosiest yarns until the mercury finally begins to rise again. Luckily, knits are big news this winter, with statement sweaters and colourful cardis adding a textural element to all of our looks. We’ve chosen five of our favourite knitwear trends for winter 24/25, with notes on how we’ll be wrapping up for the season ahead.

Kitsch Knits

Cast your mind back to the peak of lockdown, when Harry Styles wore a bright, patchwork cardigan by J.W. Anderson and many people needing a hobby attempted to recreate it. It only makes sense that Harry’s brand, Pleasing, has now teamed up with the designer to launch a capsule collection that, naturally, includes a new season rendition of the original Harry knit. The could-be-DIY feel of the cardigan and this crafty element is something we’ve seen in this season’s knitwear at the likes of Stella McCartney and Munthe. Fun knits were also spotted on the runway, with vultures and seagulls featuring on jumpers at both Loewe and Chanel. Whether it’s homemade or thrifted, these statement pieces are made to be the focal point of your outfit. Keep the rest of your look simple with blue denim and slim trainers or flats for an effortless finish.

Understated Luxe

The antithesis of the kitsch trend, understated knits favour quiet luxury over quirky. Opt for classic shapes like roll or funnel neck jumpers, or choose elevated knits with built-in scarf details, inspired by chic tastemakers like Toteme, Erdem and The Row. Look for luxe neutrals in shades of biscuit, oatmeal and, Pantone's Colour of the Year Mocha Mousse, and invest in fabrics like cashmere, wool and mohair. Pair these knits with wide-leg tailored trousers or a satin slip skirt, loafers and a long wool coat. Loop a belt around your waist (yes, over your knits) for bonus trend points and you’ve got the perfect uniform for the season.

Colour Injection

Post-Christmas, the countdown until spring can be a bit bleak, so what better way to lift your spirits than by wearing mood-boosting brights? Colourful hues and clashing shades were seen at Prada, with models wearing colourful crew necks layered with contrasting cardigans. Not only is this styling tip both cosy and striking, it’s an easy look to recreate with pieces you already have in your wardrobe. Think of unusual pairings like butter yellow with deep purple, or lime green with baby pink – the bolder the colour combo, the better!

Prim & Preppy

Not so long ago, cardigans weren’t considered a stylish staple, but since brands like Khaite brought about their resurgence in 2019, the once-frumpy cardi has made a very fashionable comeback. In fact, wearing your knits prim and proper with a preppy twist is right on trend this winter. Dior, Lacoste and Miu Miu all had a back-to-school vibe at their A/W24 shows, with Argyle knits being a standout print. Need a lesson in preppy? Button your cardigan to the top and pair it with a pleated skirt and tights, or layer a knitted tank top over a shirt and top with a blazer for a look that Elle Woods would be proud of. What? Like it’s hard?

Fair Isle Friend

If the thought of wearing a novelty Christmas jumper makes you itch, there are more subtle ways to wear winter knits. Fair Isle jumpers look chic all season and can double up as a festive-inspired knit. Aprés-ski is also a big trend for the season with designers like Emilia Wickstead, Bode and Ulla Johnson showing knitted pieces influenced by the slopes. Stick to traditional Fair Isle styles or look for brands that incorporate fun motifs into the print for a unique twist. Scour secondhand shops and resale sites for one-off pieces and vintage knits that no one else will have – then pair them with leggings, chunky boots and your biggest puffer jacket.
