Shop Your Wardrobe: The New Season Pieces You Already Own
Posted by: House of Colour, September 19, 2024
The turnover of trends is faster than ever these days. Whether it’s the key styles for the season you see on the runway or the micro-trends posted by your favourite content creator, it can be hard to keep up with what’s current. For any serious clothes addict (raise your hands) it’s the perfect time to revisit the pieces you already own – try things on, rediscover old favourites and invent new ways to wear them. You can learn to shop your own wardrobe instead of buying something new. And if you really need a ‘must-have item’ for the season, why not sell a few old pieces to make space for something new?
We’ve taken inspiration from our Autumn/Winter 2024 Seasonal Style Guide and broken down the key trends to highlight the pieces that you *probably* already own. Because in today’s world of constant overconsumption, there’s nothing more stylish than a sustainable approach to fashion.
Grown-up Grandeur
Ladylike pieces have been making their way back into our wardrobes for the past few seasons, and we’ve seen the resurgence of classic staples including ballet flats and prim cardigans. Fabrics like wool and bouclé take centre stage in the form of tailored separates or knits to create classic feminine silhouettes. Think Sex and the City’s Charlotte York and you’ll be on the right track.
Key Piece: Blazer
Take inspiration from Dior’s ‘New Look’ and cinch an old blazer with a belt to create a nipped-in waist. Raid your jewellery box for interesting pieces to accessorise your look – vintage brooches, pearls or statement earrings will all work.
Reclaimed Girlhood
An extension of spring/summer’s coquette trend, think of Reclaimed Girlhood as the little sister of Grown-up Grandeur – less polished, more playful; she wears what your inner child dreamed of wearing. Dress up in bows, lace, ruffles and fabrics you can twirl in. Stick to a sugary sweet colour palette – there’s a shade to suit everyone with this season’s pastels.
Key Piece: Shift dress
Everyone has an old shift dress in their wardrobe. Whether it’s plain or printed, refresh it for this season by popping a pretty chiffon or silk blouse underneath. To accessorise, tie a girlish bow in your hair or add an embellished headband. Mimic Miu Miu by finishing your look with ribbed tights and loafers.
Tailored Luxury
Tailored Luxury is all about clean lines and luxurious fabrics with interesting focal points. Subtle details like an asymmetric hem or a high collar can elevate classic workwear looks. Play with lengths and avoid any overly fussy pieces – focus on expensive textures like cashmere, silk, leather and wool.
Key Piece: Cashmere jumper
A cashmere roll-neck jumper (or any jumper with a high neckline) paired with straight-leg tailored trousers or a column maxi skirt will give you the Tailored Luxury look. Finish with a long wool coat and your slouchiest leather bag.
Modern Heritage
Checks always spring to mind when it comes to heritage dressing, and this season is no different. Leather, tweed and shearling will dress up your everyday looks, with a sprinkling of denim thrown in for good measure. Stick to an autumnal colour palette – A/W’s earthy browns, mossy greens and rich plums all work well for this trend.
Key Piece: Shearling jacket or checked coat
Dig out your shearling leather jacket or checked wool coat – pair it with a long skirt (pleats, leather or denim all work) and add ankle boots or loafers for a traditional country vibe.
Plush Embrace
Fluff alert! This trend is the perfect excuse to wrap up in your thickest coats, jumpers and accessories for cosy season. Embrace texture with faux fur, feathers and looped knits, and choose oversized pieces with volume for an exaggerated silhouette. Play with pastel shades or standout brights.
Key Piece: Faux fur coat
We all have a faux fur coat or two lurking in our wardrobes – dust yours off this season, the bigger and brighter the better. You can also hint at this trend with fluffy scarves, hats or oversized chenille knits.
Midnight Glamour
Eveningwear gets a dark and mysterious twist for A/W24, and who doesn’t love being dark and mysterious? Dark florals, sheer ruffles and lingerie details like corsetting bring the drama this season, but they also give a romantic/boho feel to dressing up.
Key Piece: Black evening dress
Most of us own a little black dress – bonus points if yours is velvet, lace or features embellished details. Add copious amounts of eyeliner and your highest heels, you’re good to go!
Duplicate Denim
The only way to make denim better? Double it. Denim duos were big news on the runways this season and there’s a look to suit everyone. From hourglass silhouettes at Schiaparelli to Western vibes at Louis Vuitton – the Canadian tuxedo has levelled up!
Key Piece: Anything denim!
Denim shirts with your favourite jeans, cropped jackets with classic denim midi skirts – you can’t go wrong here. Just pick one shade of denim and stick to it to get a cohesive look.
