Are you ready to ditch the hair dye? The grey hair look is all over the catwalks at the moment, and it looks like it will become one of the big hair trends of 2016. But the question is, are you ready to embrace it?
If the answer is no, that’s perfectly OK. Let’s be honest, grey hair has always been difficult for women. Men with grey hair get called silver foxes… and women don’t. Most of us instinctively reach for the hair dye. But actually, you don’t have to be a catwalk model to look amazing with grey hair. If you have the confidence to come out of hiding it can make a powerful, beautiful statement. So if you’re ready to take the plunge, or if you’re still in two minds about it, here’s how to rock grey hair.
Treat yourself to a great haircut
As your hair starts to go grey, the texture changes. It becomes thicker and coarser, so make the most of this with a beautiful haircut. Grey hair doesn’t necessarily mean short hair. While short hairstyles can look fantastic on many women, it’s not compulsory when you go grey. If you want to keep your hair longer, go for it. Whichever style you choose, make sure that you’re keeping your hair in good condition by using products specifically designed for grey hair. Choose a good hairdresser who understands the unique texture of your new hair colour. They’ll be able to offer advice on styles that will make the grey trend your own.
Be strong with the make-up and accessories
As we get older, our natural colouring gradually fades – eye colour softens, skin has less glow and vibrancy, and we lose contrast. Wearing the right colour make-up is important because it gives you back that brightness and contrast.
If you’re skin tone is cool and blue-based – winters and summers – you’ll look naturally stunning with grey hair. You’re lucky, but lipstick and make-up is still important. You’ll probably want to go for slightly stronger, brighter shades in order to make the most of your new look and re-introduce your natural contrast in colour.
Autumns and springs, people with warmer coloured complexions, have a slightly harder time. The naturally cool shade of grey hair can make us look tired and a bit… grey, but a subtle warm coloured rinse through the hair can help here, without having to use an intense dye. Again, don’t be afraid of those bold, strong make-up colours. They’ll help you make a positive, beautiful statement by putting the colour and contrast back.
Bright colours, worn close to the face, are an essential element of rocking grey hair. A fabulous scarf is the easiest way to really enhance the look. Have fun choosing accessories and key pieces that match your clothing personality, and then wear something eye-catchingly exquisite with every outfit.
50 shades of grey
There’s nothing wrong with highlights or a shampoo rinse to enhance your natural grey. For autumns and springs in particular, a warm henna or honey-coloured rinse is a great way to make your grey hair sparkle whilst looking radiant and healthy at the same time.
If you have all-over grey and have been covering up for some time, you may be worried about going cold turkey. Try switching to a semi-permanent - and use a lighter shade with each touch-up, avoiding the ends. It’s a great way to make a gradual transformation whilst avoiding grey roots. If you have uneven grey patches, consider some strategic highlights to make your grey appear well blended. Lighten the right strands and you’ll have gorgeous ribbons of silver that make the colour transformation gentle and elegantly stylish.
In the end, it’s your choice as to whether or not to embrace the grey. If it’s not for you, that’s fine. But if you’re ready to take it on with confidence, don’t hesitate. Grey hair doesn’t mean old and boring. It means strong, chic and fabulous. “I’m feeling confident, fresh, alive and SO much younger” What Lisa feels about celebrating her grey hair.
