“When I’m feeling blue, all I have to do

Is take a look at you, then I’m not so blue…”

Are you feeling blue today?

After the excitement, jollity and togetherness of Christmas, we can often start to feel down in January, culminating in Blue Monday. The weather is still dull and the nights are long; the days short.

Blue Monday 20th January is often recognised as the lowest spot in the year – our credit card bill arrives and reminds us of how much we spent on Christmas. Coupled with an earlier than usual salary payment before the Christmas break, and we feel our hearts sink.

Often we have nothing to look forward to (which is why so many of us plan our summer holidays at this time of year) and, as we have put so much of our time and energy into organising Christmas we feel we have none left over for the ongoing struggle of winter and its gloom.

Depressing, huh? No wonder it’s called Blue Monday!

Change your mindset

But it doesn’t have to be that way. We don’t need to allow circumstances to dictate how we feel. We can change our mood and our outlook by the way we dress and look on the outside. Change a negative into a positive!

Why not wear your very best blue item of clothing on Blue Monday? Or wear blue as a nail, or eyeshadow, colour, or as one of your accessories if you don’t own any clothing in blue. You could even try wearing blue mixed in a colour combination that you don’t wear very often. Most people have something blue in their wardrobe so why not root around and find something to give you a lift?

Best blues

If you are lucky enough to be a Spring, why not try on your lovely Bright Blue today?

Or an Autumn like me can go for beautiful Kingfisher blue – often seen as teal in the shops. This is easily the favourite colour in my wardrobe so it’s a pleasure not a hardship to wear this one for Blue Monday.

Or Summers have so many blues to choose from that it must be a really hard choice whether to go for a soft smoky one, or a brighter one. To give you a lift, though, pick out your Cornflower to put a smile on your face on this dull day.

And the choice for Winters has to be the deep saturated bright Electric Blue.

But I don’t like or look good in blue!

Well, if you don’t want to wear it, or it really isn’t your best colour – say, if you are a Brown Summer – why not just put on one of your Wow colours, or your favourite outfit. It will lift your mood, I promise you!

Let me tell you about my experience: a couple of winters ago, I had a streaming cold with a red nose and I looked very pale and washed out. Not a good look for anyone! To a business meeting, I wore my dark brown jacket, and a neutral skirt and blouse so that I would have the formality required. With them though, I paired a scarf and opaque tights, both in burnt orange. As soon as I put them on, I felt much more cheerful. The other businessmen and women in the room remembered me afterwards as standing out and representing my business, and not for the bright red Rudolph nose!

Fresh new Pantone colour of the year for 2020: Classic Blue!

This fresh colour trend was chosen by The Pantone Institute to instil “Calm, confidence, and connection” to highlight “Our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era”.   Think of a rich blue early evening sky before it darkens to Dior's midnight and you've got Classic Blue!

Using Classic Blue in your accessories including bags, gloves and scarves or in a chunky necklace will give a powerful punch.  Elegant in its simplicity, adding your blue splash will give you an instant update and injection of style.

So - don’t give into the blues this Blue Monday, redeem the day with your best version of yourself, in your favourite colour – blue or not. Put on your outfit, your makeup and look at yourself in the mirror … and you will SMILE!
