Breast Cancer is no respecter of persons and at House of Colour we often have the privilege of working with those who are going through the diagnosis, treatment and recovery from the disease. We know and understand how looking good while going through this experience can be incredibly powerful and a major factor in a positive recovery. And so it's our joy to be able to support the charity Breast Cancer Care by offering a special House of Colour nail polish at the price of £8.00 of which £5 from every bottle will go directly to the charity.
Our lovely model for this promotion, Ann tells us below how House of Colour helped her recover.
"WOW what a different life since having my colours and styling done at the wonderful HOC.
I am nearly 66 years old and had major surgery and treatment after being diagnosed with breast cancer, which can drain away your confidence and make you feel unattractive. You think everyone will look at you and notice the difference. Since having my colours done I know people are looking at me however for a very different reason.
Strangers actually come up to me when I am just out shopping and comment on the colours I am wearing. I find that astonishing.
I have always believed our beauty , femininity and sexuality comes from within but it shows on the outside. Being more confident, wearing the right colours and styles makes that shine through even more. My eyes just light up and sparkle but look dull and forlorn if I'm wearing the wrong colours.
I am more confident as I know I will always look and feel great. I run my own business which means I have to speak to people cold while I am out and about so this is a great boost.
Thank you House of Colour you are all wonderful!" Ann Phillpot
Several of our consultants have been through breast cancer and two of them share their thoughts with us below:
"When I learned I had breast cancer my first thought was an absolute fear of the chemotherapy ahead including the hair loss and the nausea!!!! However I was lucky and did not require such invasive treatment. Having decided to take 16 weeks off work from my House of Colour consultancy while I underwent minor surgery and radiotherapy, I was really able to concentrate on keeping and staying well. I had my colours and style analysed 11 years ago so I was also able to benefit from looking well too. I took time to apply my makeup every day prior to driving the 70 mile round trip for my radiotherapy. Wearing makeup and colours that suited me had a very positive impact on my recovery. Every time I looked in the mirror I looked well!!! Also the radiotherapy unit in Aberdeen is a lovely new department - all Spring colours with natural daylight and light oak furniture, ensuring I felt well each time I walked in. Understanding the power of colour is such a special thing – on both a physical and an emotional level I know instantly what works for me and what doesn't." Hilary
"When I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2007, I had been running my House of Colour franchise for nearly 4 years. I was obviously very shocked but was not prepared to suddenly give up everything I had worked so hard for. I decided to continue as normally I could, not only for me and the business but also to keep a sense of normality for my gorgeous daughters who were only 4 and 5 at the time.
I found work a great escape, although sometimes hard due to the nature of the job. Trying to inspire people with their colours and styles when I wasn't feeling 100% and knew I certainly didn't look as I would have liked was challenging to say the least, but I was amazed and very encouraged that none of my clients knew I was poorly unless I told them. I was complimented on my hair when it very sparse and then a wig! and on how 'well' I looked even after 5 rounds of chemo and once when I was hardly able to move due to very bad burning during radiotherapy! I had to laugh with my husband that I could keep breast cancer a secret if I wanted to even though I looked like an 'alien'.
I realised very soon that it was all down to what I was wearing and the very fact that I was practicing what I preach. If we wear our right colours and styles we always look our absolute best, even if we don't feel it at the time." Kate
